THE COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer civilian organization that helps support the United States Coast Guard in many ways.  It was created by an act of Congress in 1939.  The Auxiliary supports all Coast Guard missions except military and law enforcement actions. These missions include vessel safety checks, harbor patrols, safe boating courses, search and rescue, and marine environmental protection.  There motto is Simper Paratus (always ready).  To join the Coast Guard Auxiliary you must be a U.S. citizen, 17 years old or older.

Some of the benefits of joining the Auxiliary are access to the best on the water training.  Also for those interested there are advanced training courses in Navigation, Seamanship, Communications, Weather, Patrols, Administration and Search & Rescue.  Other benefits are the Coast Guard Credit Union, Exchanges and insurance coverage.  You get to wear the Coast Guard Auxiliary uniform and earn awards.  There is always room for fellowship and fun during the execution of any of the missions or training.

The Auxiliary is over 28,000 members’ strong nation wide.  They actively patrol America’s waterways including lakes, rivers, wet lands, bays and harbors.  Auxiliarists gather regularly for formal meetings and interact with the boating public at marinas and in classrooms.  Serving side-by-side with active duty Coast Guard members they help in times of emergency, and for every day situations.

There are 6 major areas you can help with in the Auxiliary.

1.  Public Education:  teaches courses on boating safety, navigation, and seamanship to recreational boaters of all ages.

2.  Vessel Safety Checks:  Gives free safety checks to recreational and commercial fishing vessels. These help the boating public keep their boats equipped correctly, and safely.

3.  Operations:  provides boaters and the Coast Guard with helpful information and emergency assistance.

4.  Marine Environmental Protection:  promotes clean waterways through marine pollution awareness programs that help to recognize, protect and asses the environment.

5.  Recruiting:  promotes awareness of career opportunities for service in the Coast Guard.

6.  Administrative Support:  assist the Coast Guard in areas such as computer operations, radio watch standing, publications and public affairs.

Coast Guard Auxiliarists do much for our comities and our country.  They have saved many lives by flying over 2,000 air patrols, operating over 2,300 radio stations, assisting over 11,000 boaters in distress, conducting 25,000 safety patrols, performing almost 100,000 vessel safety checks, education 500,000 students in boating safety classes, and training over 45,000 hours to develop personal skills.
